Focus Key Privacy Policy

Short version: Focus Key is local-first. It has no developer-controlled analytics or data server. Optional general browsing insights are off by default. Focus Key does not sell user data or use it for advertising.

Scope and limited use

Browser user data is used only to provide or improve the user-facing productivity features described here.

Focus Key does not sell user data; use it for personalized advertising, creditworthiness, or lending; transfer it to data brokers; or allow humans to read it. It transfers data only for requests needed to provide the YouTube features below, when the user submits a search or opens a link, through Chrome Sync when enabled, or when required for security or law. The developer does not receive local or synced workspace data.

Optional browsing insights

This feature is off by default. If enabled with Chrome's optional tabs and idle permissions, Focus Key stores the active website's domain name, local date, start timestamp, and bounded activity duration. Adult-list destinations use a private marker. This feature does not record page titles, page content, search terms, form entries, or URL paths/queries and stops counting while Chrome is unfocused or the device is idle.

YouTube focus metadata

After onboarding acceptance, Focus Key can read metadata from supported YouTube channel and watch pages and request YouTube channel or search-result pages. It uses video IDs, titles, channel names, thumbnail URLs, durations, view counts, publication text, source order, and live/upcoming status to build recommendations. It stores saved-video details, watched-video timestamps, cooldown state, cached channel catalogs, and recommendation state locally. On watch pages it reads playback state and elapsed watch time to apply configured thresholds and cooldowns. This information is not sent to a Focus Key developer server.

Other local workspace data

Local storage can contain calendar events, kanban cards, drink types/schedules/logs, Pomodoro state, onboarding choices, notification state, study-time and usage entries, and a selected study folder's read-only IndexedDB handle.

Settings that may sync

Theme, navigation visibility, fullscreen preference, focus-mode choice, block lists, study subjects, YouTube priority channels and cooldown/recommendation settings, AI-tool names/URLs, library order, and Pomodoro settings use Chrome Sync storage. Google may process this configuration under the user's account settings. Focus Key's developer cannot access it.

When data leaves the extension

• Chrome sends a submitted new-tab query to the configured default search provider.
• YouTube receives requests when Focus Key loads channel/search metadata, thumbnails, or pages needed for its distraction controls and recommendations.
• AI tools and other external sites receive normal browser requests when opened.
• Synced settings are handled by Chrome Sync when enabled.

Focus Key does not include advertising SDKs, remote code, developer telemetry, or requests to developer-controlled servers.

Permissions

• Storage: saves workspace data, choices, and settings.
• Declarative Net Request: blocks enabled domain lists.
• Search: uses Chrome's default provider.
• Alarms and notifications: supports requested reminders.
• Instagram page access: applies opt-in focus navigation and appearance.
• YouTube page access: provides the metadata, recommendation, routing, watch-page, save, and cooldown features described above.
• Tabs and idle (optional): requested only for general browsing insights.
• New-tab override: displays the Focus Key workspace.

Retention and controls

General browsing-insight entries are kept for no more than 90 days and capped at 20,000 entries. Turning insights off removes optional tab and idle permissions. Cached YouTube catalogs and recommendation/watch state remain locally until refreshed, cleared with extension data, or removed by uninstalling Focus Key. Other workspace data remains until deleted, cleared, or uninstalled; synced preferences may remain in Chrome Sync.

Security, children, and policy changes

Focus Key minimizes handled data and uses Chrome's storage boundaries and a restrictive Content Security Policy. No software can guarantee absolute security. Focus Key is not directed to children under 13. Material policy changes update the date/version and require renewed consent before optional browsing insights resume.
